The Garnet mining district was one of the earliest to be established in the Montana Territory. It was contemporary with the mines at Bannack, Virginia City, Butte, Silver Star and Philipsburg. The Garnet Gold Mine is near Pony, Montana. Historically the site has been associated with the Pony-Antelope Creek Mining District which is now part of the Beaverhead National Forest. The Garnet Gold Mine was closed at the time of data entry with no known plans to re-open. The ore mined is composed of galena. The ore body extends 7 meters (22 feet) in width. The host rock in this area is,ORE DEPOSITS OF THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE GARNET,Dunkleberg mining district, Mont. the value of $5,000,000 or more was washed out within a few years. Elk Creek also yielded abundantly, and the total placer production of the area is estimated to be between $6,000,000 and $10,000,000.
